Measuring horizontal ground deformations of the Turkey-Syria earthquakes with Sentinel-2

Sub-pixel optical correlation was applied on satellite images of the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission acquired on January 25, 2023 (pre-event) and February 9, 2023 (post-event). The principle of this method consists in detecting the same arrangements of pixels in the image acquired before and after the earthquake and in measuring the horizontal displacements (East-West, North-South) between the two positions. The GDM-OPT-ETQ service of ForM@Ter was applied on several Sentinel-2 tiles to cover the extent of the affected area; the massive calculation has been performed on the GEP / Geohazards Exploitation Platform by CNRS/EOST and ESA/SAT. Displacements up to 3 m in the East-West component and 5 m in the North-South component are identified.
