The Horizon Europe NOSTRADAMUS project is advancing the frontiers of smart agriculture by combining Earth Observation (EO), in-situ data, and socio-economic indicators to enable more efficient and sustainable agricultural practices.
Funded by the European Union, NOSTRADAMUS brings together research institutions and technology providers across Europe to create an integrated platform for data-driven decision-making in agriculture. The project supports both policy-making and operational use cases helping address pressing challenges such as climate resilience, food security, and sustainable resource management.
As part of this effort, Terradue leads several key activities within Work Package 3, focused on the development of cohesive data production pipelines.
Turning Data into Decisions: Terradue’s Role
Terradue’s core contribution is the development of a robust EO data infrastructure that can handle ingestion, discovery, access, and pre-processing of diverse datasets ranging from satellite data (e.g., Copernicus Sentinel missions) to in-situ IoT measurements and open data sources.
This infrastructure is built on cloud-native, open-source technologies, including:
- STAC (SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog) for standardised data discovery
- CWL (Common Workflow Language) for portable processing pipelines
- Containerised environments for scalable execution and deployment
The goal is to deliver analytics-ready datasets that can feed into the project’s data cubes and digital services, enabling consistent, reliable data flows across use cases and pilot sites.
Supporting the Full Data Lifecycle
In addition to data ingestion, Terradue is also involved in:
- Algorithm integration and packaging: Supporting research teams in preparing and deploying EO processing algorithms
- Cloud platform operations: Ensuring infrastructure reliability, resource scaling, and smooth integration with partner services
- Stakeholder support: Enabling collaboration through co-designed data dictionaries and open APIs
These activities are designed to ensure the NOSTRADAMUS infrastructure is usable, maintainable, and extensible by all partners.
Use Cases Across Agriculture and Policy
The NOSTRADAMUS platform will be used to support a wide range of activities, including:
- Monitoring of agricultural practices across pilot sites
- Integration of real-time IoT sensor data from the field
- Analysis of market trends and socio-economic data to support policy development
- Development of recommendation systems to help farmers adopt climate-smart practices
Terradue’s infrastructure plays a key role in enabling these capabilities by ensuring that data flows are harmonised, validated, and accessible for analysis at scale.
Building on Experience in EO Cloud Platforms
Terradue brings over 15 years of experience in EO cloud services, having developed operational platforms such as the Geohazards Exploitation Platform and the Disaster Charter Processing Environment. The approach adopted in NOSTRADAMUS draws on this background to ensure the infrastructure is interoperable, scalable, and aligned with the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable).
A Shared Vision for Smart Agriculture
The NOSTRADAMUS project reflects a shared European ambition to apply digital technologies in support of sustainable agriculture. Through its contribution to the project’s EO infrastructure, Terradue supports the creation of a digital backbone that connects data providers, algorithm developers, and decision-makers.
This work is aligned with the project’s larger goals of enabling real-time insights, improved data quality, and stakeholder collaboration contributing to a future where farming is more resilient, informed, and efficient.
